A man who fatally shot a Chicago police officer has been charged with murder, police said Wednesday.
Trayvon Martin, 28, faces up to life in prison for killing Officer Jason Van Dyke on Nov. 25, according to Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson.
Johnson told reporters at a news conference that the department has taken the case “very seriously.”
The department is working with the state to “address the circumstances surrounding the death of Officer Van Dykes,” Johnson said.
He did not identify Van Dyker as Van Dyks.
Authorities have been working for months to find a motive for the shooting, and prosecutors have said they believe the incident was racially motivated.
A manhunt has been launched for Van Dykers ex-girlfriend, who was arrested on Wednesday.
