By David G. Zatz, Reuters – Billionaire game designer Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are the latest among the top game developers in the world to say they plan to spend millions of dollars to buy a title for a billion dollars.
The Zuckerbergs, who live in Mountain View, California, are also the first couple to publicly reveal plans to buy the rights to a blockbuster game.
They announced their plans in an online video on Thursday, just weeks after Zynga, the social gaming game maker, reported its first quarterly profit.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns about the game market.
The rise of mobile gaming has seen developers scramble to secure lucrative deals to license games to consumers and companies that want to license them.
While Zyngas games are available on iOS, Android and Blackberry devices, the couple plan to take their business to the web.
Zyngatas games, including Zyngafest, the popular online gaming event, also will be available for purchase on Google Play, Apple’s online marketplace, the announcement said.
The company said it plans to invest $1 billion in the new game studio and create “a world of infinite play” in the near future.
The news comes as a growing number of top developers are stepping up their efforts to secure blockbuster titles, with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg the latest.
Earlier this year, Zuckerberg signed a $100 million deal to license his Facebook gaming games to Universal Music, which has already released a number of hits.
